On October 2019, I was selected to begin working as an Intern at Silony Medical, a German company that develops spinal and other prosthetic products and implants which have revolutionized many complex orthopedic spinal surgeries in Europe. The company has been a leader in robotics surgery as well as in seeking cost-effective solutions for highly complex and costly surgical procedures. The opportunity has not only provided me with invaluable experience in logistics management, marketing support, and customer services, but has given me a unique perspective of healthcare within the global context. For me, the experience of working with an organization which has had a strong market presence and a growth trajectory in European countries and is entering the United States and the Americas for the first time, has been invaluable. The internship has allowed me to expand the horizons of my studies in healthcare management by allowing me to get a glimpse at the broad spectrum of differences in marketing, customer service and operations from a multinational and cross-cultural perspective. A Keen aspect of this experience, has been learning how different healthcare delivery systems finance and negotiate contracts, and the special nuances and differences in cultural communications, values and approaches which crucially affect the core business processes. It has been truly eye-opening to learn how to adapt the essential corporate processes which have made the organization successful in European countries to the challenging dynamics of the United States healthcare delivery.
